Objective: To evaluate the storage and conservation practices of medications in the inpatient units of a large hospital in Rio de Janeiro in 2023. Methods: A prospective descriptive study that followed Collegiate Board Resolution (RDC) No. 210/2003, which establishes standards for Good Distribution, Storage, and Transportation Practices for Medications, with a situational assessment of medication storage in stocks outside the Pharmacy. Results: Through a situational diagnosis, non-conformities were identified, such as failures in inventory management, temperature control, and medication packaging, which can increase the risk of using expired or deteriorated medications. Qualitative assessments were performed using a checklist that examined critical items, including the presence of expired medications, the adequacy of storage, and the effectiveness of temperature monitoring systems. The implementation of satellite pharmacies was proposed to improve the management of sensitive and controlled medications. The importance of the active involvement of healthcare professionals, especially pharmacists, in promoting safe practices and continuing education was also highlighted. Conclusion: The results indicate that improvements in infrastructure and processes are essential to mitigate the identified risks and increase patient safety, as well as contribute to the sustainability of the healthcare system.
